Harvesting Barley

These pictures of two Korean women harvesting barley, the first one is in acrylics and the second is watercolor,
are from an photo album of Ken's from the time he spent in the Korean war in the 1950s.  I have been working from a few of his pictures as they are so inspiring.

Kayaks

There are a lot of colorful kayaks stored at the Landings by the Caloosahatchee River.
It is a fun sport to take them out for a few hours of paddling.

Lavender Flowers

It's Sunday and I decided it was time to paint again.  I have been taking a break lately but enjoyed fooling around with this.  I might do a little more on it in a couple of days but I am pleased that I started painting again.

Bunche Beach

This painting was done from a photo that I took at Bunch Beach in Fort Myers, Florida.  It was a perfect day and the man in the painting was is the perfect spot.  A ready made composition.
Kathryn McMahon had me add red to the shadow.  I think it was a good suggestion.

Onions

I went to the farmers market a few weeks ago and saw these onions with the early morning sun shining on them.  I had to paint them.
I started this painting with cobalt blue, permanent rose and aureolin.  I ended up adding a few more colors for the darks.

Watching the tide come in.

I took several pictures of the man at Fort Myers Beach.  He looked like he was having a very relaxing day and enjoying this beautiful weather we have been having.  I hope you enjoy it.

Flowers in the Art League

Today at Kathryn McMann's class we were instructed to look around us and paint something that was in our view.  I saw this pot of flowers in the corner with the dark doorway behind it it and loved the contrast.

Here is my painting from this morning.

Ken's Catch

Ken caught these fish at our marina Saturday and we had them for dinner.  It was just in time as we did not have any left in the freezer.
I painted it with heavy body acrylic and later added some oil pastels.
It was a fun to paint and really good to eat.

Mangrove roots on the River

On my walk this morning I saw this little bird sitting on one of the roots.
I painted the roots using by painting the negative spaces.
The rest was just a real loose painting.

The girl with the red hat.

I painted this from a photo that I took two years ago.  I loved the picture because of the girl in the red hat standing on the sand but the real focal point was the beach chair.  I had fun doing it in acrylic although painting clouds in acrylic is so different than doing them in watercolor that it was a challenge.

Indian Market Place

Today I started a watercolor study for an acrylic painting.  I thought I would work out the colors for the real thing. After doing it, I showed it to a few people and they all said I had a finish painting and to leave it alone.
So here it is. The Indian Market Place

Palm tree

I finally got my paints out today and painted this study of Palm trees.
I painted with a brush but decided to add some palette knife painting for the palm fronds.
I do think is fun to use the palette knife.

Reflection lakes

This is a painting I started when we had the paintout at R&K gallery.
I have changed it and added people.
I might change it more but at least I worked on it.

Sanibel Light House

I took an old picture and work on it.  It is fun to take old things and fix them up.  It's like having a brand new painting.

Lavender Pansies

These Pansies took a couple of days to paint.
The negative leave are fun to do, but do take time.
The picture was taken at by brothers house in North Carolina

Palette knife painting

This is the first painting I have ever done.  Kathryn McMahon show us how she does it.  She works in oil and it does seem better than acrylics, but I enjoyed doing it with my acrylics anyway.

Happy Easter

From the book Oil Painting The Workshop Experience.  "Every artist, student or professional, encounters painting that just don't want to be painted and days when nothing goes right.   In that sense, working outdoors is a lot like fishing: even the pros don't alway catch something!
There are many reasons this might happen.  Sometimes you just don't know enough about your subject.  You could be tired, preoccupied, not feeling like painting, in a lousy frame of mind, or simply having a bad day!"
"Stop painting reorganize your studio, clean out the garage, are curl up with a good book.  Don't sweat it.  You're not alone, and it's not the end of your painting career."  This is an Easter Egg Hunt at Church!
I went to church, lunch, and read a good book,

Matlacha

I painted this picture of a boat behind one of the buildings in Matlacha going to the park.  The boat was really a aqua green, but it did not go with the rest of the painting.  I also had different color tree in the painting which made it look like two painting.  I didn't notice this when I first painted it.   Some times I think you should leave painting alone for a while,  you see them better after a while.  Sometimes they are wonderful, but others need a little work like this one did.
Now that I see it on the screen it may still need a little more yellow on the left hand side or blue on the right.

West Hampton, NY

I found of folder with a whole group of my older painting today.  I thought this was one of the more interesting . I had used Nita Engles method of the yellow, red and blue circles when I painted it.  I worked on it some more today and hoped I fixed it up.

Class demo

Hi I did this little demo for my class using antwerp blue + cad red to make black.  I pulled the paint out with a fan brush to show hairs on the cat.  The class enjoyed the demo.

Sunday, April 17, 2011

This coconut palm was painted from a photo I took at Joanne's house on Fort Myers Beach.  Just having fun painting on 300lb arches.  The 300 lb absorbs the paint quite differently than the 140lb.  I still like Arches 140lb the best,

SCCF

Thursday a group of us went painting Sanibel,  We went to the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation.
There were trails into swamp lands and a nice nursery.  I decided to paint at the nursery and it was lovely except for the bugs.  Next time I paint out I will remember the bug spray. I might have more work to do on this but for now I will call it done.

Just Started "The Red Barn"

I didn't get to paint today but I started this yesterday.  Hope I can get it done tomorrow or  Friday.
I am going to Sanibel for Plein Aire Paintign tomorrow.  Haven't done that in awhile and don't know how fast I will be.  Hope it isn't too hot.
I have a lot of work but it is a fun painting.

Pauline's Art: Pink Hibiscus

Pauline's Art: Pink Hibiscus: "This is a watercolor painting that I painted from an old photo that I took when I lived in Indian Creek. It was a frustrating painting..."

Red Hibiscus

I started this painting at Art on the Boulvard from the beautiful pots of Hibiscus in front of the building.
I had my acrylic class today but didn't get any paintings done.  I went to the new Hobby Lobby.
I just love that store.  They have lots of art supplies.

Monday, April 11, 2011

Well it's done.  I worked on it last night and then more this morning.
I had my painting class today, and my students all like it.  The students are doing really well.  They make me want to paint more.  Hope you like it.
I really don't have time to start a new one tonight, but I have an acrylic class tomorrow morning with Kathryn McMahon at the Art League of Fort Myers.  She is a very good teacher.

Church today

I didn't have time to do a full painting but started these building near KR Design.
Very pretty area with Jason's deli. and a pretty court yard.
I am working on 300 lb. arches and it takes a long time to dry.  I am having fun painting with it but really like 140lb Arches better.

Two Hibiscus Paintings

I missed yesterday but am trying to make up for it today.
I cut canvas and put it on foam board to fit some small frames that I have.
I am using acrylic paints for these. I am going to try to do a few more of these little paintings.

Painting at The Art League of Fort Myers

On Wednesday morning a group of painters get together at the art league to paint, a little socializing and some times lunch at one of the nice restaurants in downtown Fort Myers.
Today I finished the painting I started yesterday.
It is from a photo I took at the Biltmore Estates in North Carolina.

Downtown Painting

I started a painting at the Art League of Fort Myers in my acrylic class that I take from Kathryn Mcmann.  I left the painting at the art league to finish.  I started a landscape painting of a picture I took in North Carolina.
I hope I will finish tomorrow and show it.
I am putting on one of my watercolor landscapes for today.
This is A Rocky Stream from a picture I took in Colorado.
